‘StoatWaffle’ Malware Targets Developers via Malicious VS Code Projects

A new cybersecurity threat has emerged as a malware strain named ‘StoatWaffle’ is being used to target software developers. The campaign is attributed to the North Korea-linked threat actor WaterPlum (also known as the Lazarus Group). The attack vector involves malicious Visual Studio Code (VSCode) projects, often disguised as legitimate blockchain-related repositories, to compromise developer machines. The malware’s execution is cleverly triggered automatically when a developer opens and trusts the malicious folder in VS Code. This is achieved by abusing the “runOn:folderOpen” feature within a compromised tasks.json file. StoatWaffle is a modular malware built with Node.js and includes components for credential theft and remote access (RAT). This campaign, dubbed “Contagious Interview,” signifies an evolution in the threat actor’s tactics towards more automated and less user-interactive compromises.
